Publisher’s Porch: Turning the Page

Welcome back to the porch.

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate about local newspapers is that they’re always balancing two responsibilities. We preserve the history of our communities, but we also have to keep looking ahead. If we stop doing either one, we’re not doing our job.

This week is one of those moments where the future takes a noticeable step forward.

This week, the Yale Expositor will launch its brand-new website at yaleexpositor.com. It’s something we’ve been working on behind the scenes for months, and I’m excited to finally share it with you.

The new site will allow us to bring you breaking news, sports scores, community announcements, photos, and other stories much faster than a weekly publication ever could. Whether you’re here in Yale or keeping up with home from somewhere else, staying connected to the community will be easier than ever.

But let me also make one thing clear: the website isn’t replacing the newspaper.

In fact, the printed edition will continue to be where you’ll find our most complete coverage. Not every story will appear online, and some features will remain exclusive to the newspaper. The website is designed to complement the print edition, not compete with it. If you want everything happening in Yale, you’ll still want to pick up the paper every Wednesday.

The good news doesn’t stop there.

Next week, we’ll welcome Max Kappel to the Yale Expositor as our newest reporter. Max joins us through the nationally recognized Report for America program, which places talented journalists in communities where strong local reporting can make the greatest difference.

Bringing another journalist into our newsroom means more stories, more time spent in the community, and more opportunities to shine a light on the people and organizations that make Yale such a special place to live.

Taken together, a new website and a new reporter aren’t just upgrades — they’re investments. Investments in stronger local journalism, stronger community connections, and a newspaper that will continue serving Yale for generations to come. So check out the new site, say hi to Max, and don’t hesitate to let us know what you think of the changes we’ve been making. I will see you back here on the porch next week.
