Amish woman, horse killed after driver falls asleep, hits buggy in Sanilac County
SANILAC COUNTY — Another crash has claimed the life of an Amish person driving a horse-drawn buggy in Sanilac County.
According to authorities, a 22-year-old Amish woman was driving her buggy on Peck Road, near Maple Valley Road in Flynn Township, on Thursday night just before 5 p.m.
Michigan State Police said a 55-year-old North Branch man apparently fell asleep at the wheel and struck the horse-drawn buggy. Both the woman and the horse were pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers have not said whether charges will be filed against the driver.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, the Brown City Police Department, Aspire EMS, Tri-Hospital EMS and the Brown City Fire Department.
Following a rash of recent fatal crashes statewide involving vehicles and buggies, State Police are reminding drivers to stay alert, especially in areas known for Amish travel.
