Imlay City picks up homecoming win over Yale

IMLAY CITY — It was a festive night in Imlay City last Friday, as the Spartans celebrated homecoming with a downtown parade prior to their Blue Water Area Conference matchup against Yale.

While the parade was a success, attention quickly shifted to the football field, where the Spartans are enjoying one of their best seasons in recent history.

With a 22-9 win over the Bulldogs, Imlay City (6-1 overall) kept its record nearly clean, with its only loss coming against BWAC champion Almont. The Raiders defeated previously undefeated Lutheran North in a 28-27 thriller last week to win the title outright.

Yale, which has only a win over Richmond to its credit, has struggled defensively. That trend continued Friday night as the Spartans’ offense scored three touchdowns.

The Bulldogs’ lone touchdown came courtesy of sophomore quarterback Austin Rhodes, who found senior receiver Mikey Cowhy for a 9-yard pass in the end zone.

Yale managed just three more points against the Imlay City defense despite a few big plays, including a long pass to senior exchange student Isaac Wheatley and a key scramble by Rhodes during the team’s sole scoring drive.

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Bulldogs remain on the road this week at Armada for their final BWAC contest.

Yale will close out its season at home in Week 9 against nonconference opponent Holly.
