KENOCKEE TWP. — Kenockee Township took another step in addressing ongoing financial concerns June 23, approving an independent forensic audit following a closed-session meeting with attorney James Downey.
The township board held a special meeting for an undisclosed matter before quickly entering closed session for attorney-client discussion. After returning to open session, board members voted to authorize a third-party forensic audit of the township’s financial records.
The decision comes as township finances have remained under public scrutiny in recent years.
Previous meetings have included questions from residents regarding township finances, budgets and financial transparency.
Unlike a standard financial audit, a forensic audit is a more detailed examination of financial records. It is typically conducted when officials seek an independent review of transactions, accounting practices or other financial matters that require closer examination.
Treasurer Patti Shappee appeared supportive of the decision, saying the audit would provide answers and help clarify questions surrounding the township’s finances.
