The Novel Page: ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’

“Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt

This book follows Tova Sullivan, a 70-year-old who works the night shift cleaning at the local aquarium. It is there that her unique connection with the resident Giant Pacific Octopus named Marcellus — who narrates the story — allows us to discover their tales. 

While the book was the basis for the movie version of this story, for the first time in the history of comparing the two, I prefer the movie. Both are good with complex characters and history, but Sally Field fits the persona of Tova so well that I could not imagine her otherwise. 

I recommend this book for adult readers for language and some content.
