Lake Huron Cluster brings canine competition to Goodells
GOODELLS — Dogs of all ages, sizes and skill levels will take center stage when the St. Clair Kennel Club in conjunction with other local clubs, host the Lake Huron Cluster on Sept. 11-13 at Goodells County Park.
The three-day event will feature dog shows, obedience and rally trials, FAST Cat races and AKC-sanctioned competitions. Visitors will also find food and pet-themed vendors, raffles, pet health clinics, onsite camping and a new scavenger hunt for children (Saturday and Sunday).
Across the country, events like this are adopting new names that recognize the many clubs working together to make them possible.
“It isn’t that these partnerships are a new thing,” Denise Lotan said. “It helps recognize what makes it all possible.”
Lotan is the Publicity Committee Chair for the St. Clair Kennel Club.
Obedience and rally trials test how well dogs understand commands while navigating obstacles and completing as many as 20 tasks, including retrieving articles. FAST Cat gives canine athletes the chance to compete in a timed 100-yard dash, while puppies ages 4-18 months may participate in the puppy competition.
Visitors can meet owners and breeders representing a variety of dog breeds while learning about the jobs the animals were bred to perform and how their temperaments may fit different households. Breeders can also offer guidance about training, responsible handling and dog ownership.
Children ages 5-9 can also participate in the Pee Wee class, which Denise Lotan described as a fun introduction to showmanship with judges offering helpful tips to young handlers.
Pet health clinics will provide screenings for eye and genetic conditions that may affect breeding suitability or competition classification. Vendors will also offer a variety of pet-related products and services.
The St. Clair Kennel Club involves local businesses and organizations in the event. The Emmett Lions Club will oversee parking again this year.
Kennel club members remain active in the community throughout the year, including providing therapy dog visits at local schools and hospitals. Club President Richard Lawless said last year that children often recognize him in the community after seeing him visit their schools with his dog.
Dog owners may also participate in organized fitness walks, and American Kennel Club members can work toward earning fitness titles for their dogs.
The Lake Huron Cluster will be at Goodells County Park, 8254 County Park Drive. Admission is $5 cash per vehicle entry.
